Library Study

Year: 2015

Located in the Emerald Necklace, a public park in Downton Boston, this proposal for the MFA Fine Arts Library is separated into several different buildings and spaces, each with a different degree of public and private. Whereas the most public program is in the loudest and most sculptural building, the rare books collection is housed in the most formally generic space. The surprise is the main reading room, which is accessible to both MFA students and to the public. This reading room is an excavated cavity that is both above and below ground, with an earthen floor and skylights that vary depending on the program underneath.
